The Joy of Math
Survive Thrive
My aim at the Notion of Math is to help students appreciate the beauty of mathematics so that they get excited about math learning. I help my students do this by encouraging them to understand concepts deeply - the idea of a limit in calculus, the idea of an exponent, the basics of trigonometry, the notion of an infinitesimal, the definition of math itself…
Personally, I have always dreamed of having a bird’s eye view understanding of every mathematical concept and how each new idea is related to every other concept in math. Nevertheless, I have discovered the following in this pursuit: When I first start fiddling with a new concept in math, I need to be okay with not understanding everything about it. In fact, I need to give myself lots of time to come to terms with the new idea. Then over time as I begin to play with it more and particularly solve problems using this newly learned concept, then I will be able to appreciate the idea more completely. Until then, consistency and motivation are essential - and this is what I hope to teach my students.

Here is our process to overcoming obstacles in Math Learning
Identify the hurdle
What is the student struggling with? Is there a gap in the student’s mathematical knowledge or is the pupil simply struggling with understanding the concept?
Make a battle plan
If there is a gap in student’s mathematical knowledge, then what topics do I need to teach the student to cover this gap.
Encourage the student
Keep the student motivated and help them have a growth mindset. There is no distinction between a math person and the so-called not a math person!
Communicate and keep the student informed
Inform the student about the progress they have made over time. This helps the student see the end in sight and be further motivated. Math can indeed be fun and enjoyable!
We help students learn MATH
Whether the student is struggling with quadratic, rational or even trigonometric equations - we help the student to make sense of it all.
At the Notion of Math, we offer group courses and also 1-on-1 personal tutoring lessons in mathematics. Group courses are currently offered in grade 9 and grade 11 mathematics. Taking these courses can help students build a strong foundation and help them excel when they take the course at school. Information about our group courses can be found here.
We also offer 1-on-1 tutoring which is best suited for students who are struggling to keep up in class or want their performance to improve in tests or quizzes. In the past, our students have also benefitted from our 1-on-1 tutoring program by learning course content of the next grade level ahead of time. Indeed, our private tutoring lessons are tailored to individual needs and can be adjusted based on need. More information about our 1-on-1 tutoring sessions can be found here.
